PHUKET-
Twin 40-Meter Fire Dragons Illuminate Old Town, Drawing Thousands of Visitors
Phuket launched its spectacular Chinese New Year celebration, known locally as the “Month Three Festival,” on February 22nd, 2026, transforming the island’s historic quarter into a vibrant stage of light, culture, and community.
The opening ceremony, held at the Chartered Bank intersection in Talad Yai, was presided over by Phuket Governor Nirut Pongsitthithavorn, joined by Kusumal Pongsitthithavorn, President of the Phuket Red Cross, and Supachok La-ongpetch, Mayor of Phuket City. The event drew government officials, local residents, international tourists, and media representatives in large numbers.

Organized under the theme “Discover Phuket”, the three-day celebration (February 22–24) is to showcase the island’s cultural identity while boosting tourism and the local economy. The festivities are part of the broader “Phuket Festival 2026: Full Happiness Experience”, featuring dazzling light installations, cultural performances, and interactive activities across seven stages and five photo-friendly checkpoints in the Old Town.

The undisputed highlight of this year’s festival is the “Dragon Dome Tunnel” , two illuminated fire dragons, each stretching over 40 meters. One dragon extends along Thalang Road from Yaowarat intersection to the Chartered Bank junction, while the other lights up Thepkasattri Road from Yaowarat intersection to Tua Poh junction. Together, they create a glowing corridor of prosperity and good fortune, captivating visitors with their grandeur.

Adding to the excitement, a grand parade marched from Nawamin Square to the Chartered Bank intersection, featuring students, teachers, community groups, and officials, including the governor and city leaders, walking alongside the crowd.

The festival also shows Chinese heritage through hands-on workshops such as paper folding, traditional paper cutting, calligraphy, and guzheng performances. These activities encourage youth and the public to engage with and take pride in their cultural roots.

As part of Phuket’s designation as a UNESCO City of Gastronomy, the event gathered more than 400 food vendors and 13 food trucks, offering local delicacies, desserts, and beverages. This culinary showcase not only delighted visitors but also generated income for local businesses.
Governor Nirut stated that the “Month Three Festival” is a driver of economic growth and tourism, powered by cultural soft power inherited from ancestors. “This event strengthens confidence in Phuket as a destination, stimulates tourism, and brings smiles to both residents and visitors,” he said.
